I’m stationed at Fort Bliss Texas. Yesterday (Friday) we had what we call in the Army “pay day activities”. This is where you come in wearing your dress uniform for inspection and then you get the rest of the day off to go pay bills. Most of the guys in the unit went to play golf. I decided I would go to the Rod and Gun Club to site in my new 9mm. While at the range I came across a couple of nice guys shooting. We shared some conversation and sent some rounds down range from each others pistols. As I was packing up they noticed my Archery gear in the back of my pickup. Well curiostity got the best of them and they started asking questions about traditional archery compared to compound gadgetry. They then asked if I could hit the sillouette that was at the end of the range. Now this was only a distance of 25 meters (just over 27 yards) so I said of course. I got out my hickory Modoc style longbow, strung it up and sent 5 arrows, one after the other sailing down range connecting center-mass to the human shaped sillouette. This sparked 30 more minutes of conversation on where and how to obtain a longbow, what to hunt in West Texas, how many pounds should I start off with and so on. I gave these Gents some information and went on my way. While saying our goodbyes they were adamant in their new found decisions to get into traditional archery. No compounds, all natural, primitive, traditional archery. Who would have thought a day at the pistol range could be such a blessing!?

Sounds like a fun day all around. Did active duty switch to dress blues yet or is it still Class A’s? I have been meaning to look up hog hunting down south. If the TV is to be believed (not a good idea, I know), the south is teaming with hogs and ranchers are willing to let anyone take all they can handle. I was wondering if you partake or if you have heard of anything down there. I didn’t get a chance to check out the surroundings last time I was at Fort Sam (too many nights at Camp Bullis). Speaking of, there are some nice deer there, just have to watch out for UXO. 😆 Hope all is well.
