Well… it is almost a week into the 2009 Regular (Gun) Deer Season . I knew just a few short weeks ago when I picked up my bow and walked into the woods, to relish every moment, because it will be over in the blink of an eye. And I still have all my tags! Not that I didn’t try, missed a nice 8 pt buck. But, that’s all part of the game. I had experiences with bears, coyotes, bobcats and of course the deer. I will bow hunt throughout the remaining seasons through December, and if nothing else occurs, I already have a season full of sunrises & sunsets, wild places and wild animals. These are the things that I hold dear. This is my 40th season hunting. As I reflect on the past season, and past years I know completely in my heart, that I was blessed with a better life than I deserve.

Hi Steve
For what it’s worth I think we get the life we deserve either thru work or reward, always be sure to share with family and friends.

Steve Sr. — (And we still need to hear about Steve Jr.) — You clearly have been blessed with a good life, reflected in your good ethics and attitudes, but I doubt better than you deserve! For myself, I want desperately to believe in karma as an active pysical force — when we do more good than harm in life, we are rewarded with good luck; and when we are jerks to others and the natural world, we are punished with bad luck. (Other terms for karma include “just desserts” and “the receiving end of the Golden Rule.” But alas, the proof is overwhelming that no such “law of the universe” is in action insofar as applying to everyone. Restricting this conversation to hunting, just look at all the “good luck” that comes to real s–theads! So at least karma, by any name or believe, doesn’t work to punish bad behavior. But on a very personal level, I believe in reaping what we sew, which helps to keep me on the straight and narrow. So far and we must hope always, you and most everyone else who’s bothering to “stand and deliver” on this uniquely positive website is on the good side of karma and the lucky side of life’s blessings. Happy holidays, all! (And I sure wish I had a hunting season left here in CO, rifle or otherwise … of course I wouldn’t carry a 10-pound rifle when I can tote my 1-pound Shrew!). Blessings, dave

Great attitude to have! I’m still a work in progress.:)
I too, have until January 1st to fill a tag yet. My attitude went South on November 15th, while bowhunting on the opener of firearm season. Our opener fell on a Sunday this year, and I heard more shooting this year than all three previous years combined! I was seething inside thinking about all the hunting I did, then these others just plop their rear-ends down for a few minutes opening morning, shoot a deer, then brag about their hunting prowess. I know I shouldn’t feel that way. If for no other reason, I can’t change it! I’m working on it.

I too have one more month to harvest a deer or cougar- black bear ended a couple of weeks ago.
The sun finally broke thru after two weeks of unremitting rain here in the PNW so I rushed off to the local Snoqualmie River thickets interspersed with large undulating fields of short grass- just me and 5 or so pheasant hunters and dogs- boom!boom!boom! Had 3 hens fly overhead, thought about the flu-flu and laughed- no chance,no tags, no deer(surprise) but the Lord knows I had a wonderful time ambling and exploring on a beautiful fall day.
So I stump shot with the Judo and Agincourted 200 long paces in the fields, came home tired and empty-handed but replete with a day well spent- I’ll return after the shotgunners give it up Sunday.
SteveMcD, my father was born and raised in Palenville in the Catskills- fond memories of trout fishing and Aunt Bertha! on a family visit another age ago.
If we are not fortunate enough to tagout, hopefully the freezer is full of frozen beef, pork and chicken- would I hunt harder and longer if it was empty- you betcha! Then again there are rabbits and grouse- hope springs eternal in the human breast! God Bless and Good Hunting- Bert -
Steve,
I would consider your season thus far, successful, having seen all of that wildlife and made memories of the hunt.
Our deer season will draw to a close Jan 1 but the small game seasons continue through the end of Jan for squirrel and Feb for rabbits. Hope to have a hog hunt this spring so I have something to work toward. Hope everyone had a great Holiday!
