Our late season archery hunt is winding down in Oregon and the rain is picking up. What are your thoughts about hunting in the rain in regards to blood trailing?

I won’t hunt in a good steady rain back in the East… too much understory in the archery season and you can walk within a few feet of a downed animal and not see it. Tracking dogs on leashes is becoming more popular but some states :oops:still won’t allow it even if fully controlled.

I have many associates and friends in the coastal areas like you, ShaneH and they don’t hesitate to be out in light drizzle…

I saw more deer in a light to moderate drizzle, but always hesitated to drop the string for fear of tracking.

Having said that, with high FOC and single bevel two blades and a better sharpening process (thanks, Ron), I often see or hear them drop within earshot…

Each has to know w hat they can live with… Loose one for ANY reason and it starts to color your choices…

            Yeah, what that guy said.

In fact, it’s $%^&*(! raining right now, with four days left of the deer season and two unfilled tags …

Two unfilled tags here too, but no rain. We keep getting what they call Wintery Mix. Which amounts to noisy snow. At least if I manage to hit something, I can track it, as long as it stays in the shade (snow is gone where the sun shines). Good thing about the noisy snow is that I can learn a lot about where they hang out, between the times I sit shivering on stand. Oh, and if I’m shivering, I’m not sweating, so I don’t smell. 😀

I shot my buck this year in a fairly steady rain. By far and away the most important factor is shot placement. I’ve never avoided hunting during a rain. HOWEVER, I will restrict my shots more than normal. If you put the arrow where it’s suppose to go, you’re golden…rain or not.

Dang here in Alaska if you don’t hunt in the rain you would never get to hunt. I love hunting in the rain.
