I know many of already practice proper tree stand safety. But i made a video for those that are not aware of the proper ways to be safe or the benifits of useing a lineman belt. So thought I would share it for those that dont know.

Hunting season is here and making sure we make it back to our families is important. these few extra steps can help.

Wow…you went to a lot of trouble and did that very nicely.

I see you do not use the prusic hitch connection to the tether and safety rope around the tree when in final position on the stand. I like the adjustability of the prusic hitch on the safety rope around the tree on stand.

That safety web belt that retracts is pretty cool. A friend of mine installs climbing rope life lines to all his set stand locations w/ a prusic hitch so you’re connected the whole way up and into the stand & back down. He takes them down each season and uses ratchet straps to double up on the stand’s connection to the tree, whether web strap or chain.

Safety takes a minute, but can lessen a lifetime of regret when accidents happen. Thanks for your video!

Doc, Thanks for the compliments. Great tips you added. I also double strap the stands alot. actually the lonewolf stand is suppose to be double strapped. I just used one strap to demonstrate how easily alot of stands can kick out.

I do use a prusic knot on the saftey strap around the tree when im hunting. Prusic knots are amazing and so simple. For my linemany belt i actually built my own from rock climbing components using a ropeman ascender unit, climing rope, and climbing carabiners. I like that i can work it one handed to get closer or farther from the tree. Its very similar to a prusic knot, but a little faster and easier. With hunting state land i dont leave stands up. I put up and take down every time i hunt. so putting up that many stands the system works great for me. if i was hunting like most people i would use a prusic knot on my lineman belt and not bother with the system i made.

The “safety line” that goes around the tree top and bottom (once stand is up) is made from climbing ropes…then lighter climbing rope for the prussic knot / loop, on my buddy’s stands. It’s his land, so he leaves the stands up, changes out the ratchet straps and takes down the Safety lines each year.

I, too, hunt public land so like you, cannot leave up stands.

That big metal re-tractor appeared a heavy/large to hump in and out of the woods, but as you say, for inexperienced users of stands…very cool. There is some sort of “Vest” safety full body harness with that gizmo in them I read about.

Out of my price range. I have a really long SOP tree rope that I can expand when I get up to the top of my climbing apparatus and have it go around the stand, then cinch it up again till I’m on the stand…

Silly me, I never thought of just loosening the tether rope and sliding it down to climb in/out! Doh! I guess partly because I try to get it above a bark knot or something or my bow hanger and cinch it up so it’s EXACTLY where I want it… then slide my prussic up/down the tail of the tree rope if I want to stand, sit or lean out. But your idea has tons of merit!

              Thanks for sharing all that!
