Hey fellas, I spent a few days out in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Had a great time. It was storming, snow above us on the peaks. These early rainstorms meant we could have a fire, so we cooked right over the flames. It was great. We saw 3 bucks and 2 bears. My buddy came up specifically to bear hunt, but couldn’t shoot either of them. We tried for the bucks too, but they were pretty crafty and lived. One had a barrel for a stomach, he was big. After jumping him twice he ran into this overhead thick brush right past an old-secure bedsite, so we backed off cause it was too thick.

Here’s a few pictures of the hunt. That’s me with a huge chanterelle we cooked up with chopped lamb and bear lard. The last photo is of a fresh bear scat, the bear had been eating snow berries. I’ve never seen them eat this before, but the acorns up here have been gone for over a month and the bears were back to eating plants and I guess snow berries too.

To comment on another thread ‘Assumptions’ by Bruce: You can probably tell my buddy Matt was carrying a compound. Regardless of our choice of weapons, there aren’t many people I’d rather be hunting with than this guy. He had an opportunity on a bear, but some wispy twigs were hanging in front of the bear’s vitals and he passed on the shot.

It was really nice to be out in some wild country with no one else around for miles. Its been a long and awesome season, yet I haven’t released a single arrow. Next week I leave for New England for the white-tail rut!

Great pics and it looks like an awesome time. I’ve always wanted to spend more time exploring the Trinitys. And yeah, we have lots of snowberries here, and I’ve never seen them in bear scat before?!?

Prettiest poop I’ve ever seen, and I’ve changed a lot of diapers.

              Excellent report, thanks for sharing.

Watch your footing when you come east, we have a monster acorn crop in New England this year.

The monster acorn crop is in New Hampshire, kinda mediocre down here in Mass. If you would care to bring down a few truckloads…
