I headed up to the mountains yesterday. Due to falling rocks, all the roads on the wma were closed, so I just parked at one and went for a stroll. 6.5 miles later, I still hadn’t crossed a mammal track. The mountains just seem to die in the winter, especially because bears make up 75% of the big game.
Anyway, it was nice to be back in the hills. It snowed all day and the wind was howling. Around 9am, I found an old campsite and built a little fire. It had been raining all week and it was hard to get anything lit with the wind and damp wood. Luckily, I had brought along a bag of Doritos and I remembered an old survivorman trick. Those fatty chips make excellent fire starters. Got her going in no time and got a chance to warm up.
Also got to do a good deed and give an AT thru-hiker a lift into town.
Now I’m ready for turkeys!

Etter , that sounds like a fine outing for sure . The 6.5 miles is out of reach here in Ohio . There may be places that deep here but I don’t know of it .
So you’re getting ready for turkeys . Will you be hunting them with bow of shotgun ?
Our season opens 3rd week of april here .Would like to get out and make tracks in my favorite woods but being on un-employment income has kept things pretty tite and close to home .
Thanks for the tip about the Doritos .
Were you carrying your bow on the walk ? We have no closed season on varmints here which allows me to always carry a bow when scouting or loafin’ in the timber .

We’re allowed three turkeys here in GA. If I get lucky enough to get two out of the way with the shotgun, I’ll try for the third for a while with my recurve.
Have never bowhunted them before, but it seems like the supreme big game challenge! And yes, I was looking for pigs to kill yesterday.

I agree totally on the ”SUPREME CHALLENGE”. I got one in my lap last spring using jake yelps . He made a wide 180 around me ,,,,went half way back ,,,then back again . I called sparingly and he’d gobble hard about 30 seconds after my yelps . After he returned to the end of his first 180 trek , he went silent . I faced away and purred like a hen , followed by a jake gobble …Seconds later I could hear him spittin’,,,,,no drummin’. He stepped into veiw at 12 yards .
Had my bow arm extended and tension on the string . I needed him to walk behind a huge cedar . He did exactly that . But he never came out on my side .???? I peeked around and he’d evidently heard my shirt . He was running straight away , keeping that cedar between us .:D:D
If that’s the best I ever do with the recurve on turkeys I’ll be very happy . But like you ,I intend to try again .

I sure hope you’re a better shot with the recurve than you are with the shotgun..
:D:lol:
