Inspired by blacktail’s question, I am wondering if anyone can tell me what to look for in a moose situation? I got a topo map of the area I will be hunting with the camp in the center and 6 miles all around. I am supplementing with aerial photos from bing maps. So what should I look for?

Just please don’t say “swamp” as the entire map is just that. I have a river that is my main mode of transport (via boat) or a road, but that isn’t as promising (you get unlimited fishing with a QC hunting license, hard to do from the Jeep). I am including a snapshot if it helps. The small black dots in the middle are the camp. Anyway, all ideas / help is greatly appreciated. I can’t wait for this trip. Be well.

I’ m no mooser, but I’ve seen them wading the ponds often enough to toss it out. I do believe some of the aquatic plants are higher in sodium, and if I remember that is a highly sought after nutrient for moose in particular. Possibly the ponded areas near a bit of higher ground? Just a thought and I may be all wet:D

            Alex,

As usual I have nothing helpful to add, but I LOVE doing map recce’s of places I have never been and I just got so excited for you, looking at your map! I’m jealous and just wanted you to know that 😀

Killed lots of moose, but not one near a swamp! All deep in bush, and during the rut. Late season can be good too, as they will go to lower ground/open areas for food once the snow hits.
