WELL…TODAY IN MISSISSIPPI, A BILL WHICH HAS ALREADY PASSED IN THE HOUSE WILL BE DECIDED UPON THAT WILL DECREASE OUR BOWSEASON BY ABOUT 20 DAYS AND GIVE THAT TO THE PRIMITIVE WEAPON SEASON. NOW LET ME EXPLAIN OUR PRIMITIVE WEAPON SEASON. A FEW YEARS AGO, THEY CHANGED THE RULE ALLOWING SINGLE SHOT BREECH LOAD RIFLES SUCH AS THE 45-70 OR THE 444 MAG TO BE USED WHICH BY NO MEANS ARE PRIMITIVE. THE MS DWFP ARE TOTALLY FOR THE CHANGE CLAIMING IT WILL BRING MORE PEOPLE TO THE WOODS, INCREASING SALES AND BETTER CONTROLLING OUR OVERPOPULATED HERD. THEY CLAIM IT WILL NOT EFFECT THE BOWHUNTER WHATSOEVER BECAUSE WE CAN STILL HUNT THROUGHOUT THE SEASON BUT I KNOW FOR SURE I CAN TELL A DIFFERENCE IN PRESSURE AND PATTERNS WHEN THE GUNNERS HIT THE WOODS. NOW I BOWHUNT ALL SEASON ANYWAY, SO IM NOT AS EFFECTED AS SOME WILL BE AND IN NO WAY DO I HOLD ANY NEGATIVITY TOWARD GUN HUNTERS, I JUST PREFER THE CHALLENGE OF THE BOW, BUT THE DEBATE OVER THE ISSUE WAS UNNERVING. ONE GUNNER CALLED IN AND SAID IT WAS US BOWHUNTERS ALWAYS COMPLAINING AND WANTING SPECIAL PRIVILEGES AND THAT WE WANTED THE EASY KILL! I WAS FLOORED! A GUNNER ACTUALLY SAID WE WANTED THE EASY KILL? UNBELIEVABLE. ANYWAY ITS ALMOST INEVITABLE THAT IT WILL PASS AND I’LL LIVE I GUESS, BUT ALL THESE CHANGES I WONDER WHEN IT WILL STOP. ANYWAY, I WENT A LITTLE LONGWINDED BUT I NEEDED TO VENT TO PEOPLE I THOUGHT WOULD UNDERSTAND MY FRUSTRATIONS. THANKS FOR THE EAR AND LONG LIVE THE BOW!!!

All comes down to the Almighty Dollar. I know here in New York, the state is nothing but red ink and in dire budgetary straits so to speak. These state conservation departments are not managing wildlife, they are managing their budgets and anything to increase license sales to them is a good thing. New York says the same thing, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that 15 -20 years ago at night there’d be 30 to 40 deer in one field, now you’re lucky if you see 15 !!! We need BETTER hunters not more hunters.

Technology, Greed and a good dose of near-sighted stupidity is ruining our sport. That gunner you mentioned only demonstrated how little bandwidth of knowledge he actually has.

Kudos to SteveMcD: Ohio DNR is the same way, If they can’t sell an extra tag for it, it doesn’t count!

Have you called your representitive, commissioners about your concerns?

msarcher — your good luck! Were I you, and were I/you concerned that this might rear its ugly head again, I would find out why the Senate chair wouldn’t bring it to a vote. Maybe it has nothing to do with his feelings about right or wrong. But maybe it does, in which case you should get all your trad buddies to join you in writing the chairman, thanking him for killing this garbage, reminding him of what is fair and right, and encourage him to hold the line if it comes back again. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” still works. Best luck. dave

Excellent response Dave! You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

Apparently these types of sentiments from gun hunters is not new or isolated. 20+ years ago I witnessed a similar speech at a NCWRC hearing. They were trying to stop additional weeks being added to the archery season. I drew the conclusion that the gentleman was trying to mislead the board with an emotional plea, saying they did not realize how “good” we are with our bows. Clearly he had not reviewed the previous years kill report. Easy kill? Oh please give us all a break!

Msarcher, being a pessimist when it comes to anything like this I would take this judgment as no more than a breathing space, it may be a good time to have ‘primitive’ defined, get a definition that is acceptable to the ‘primitive’ community and have it recorded for latter reference.

                      Just my humble opinion, Mark.
