Since the Canadian government seems to think all owners of handguns are bank robbers, I can’t legally carry a sidearm with me in the bush. So I had this blade made for use as a last ditch Bear defence weapon. By last ditch I mean my yelling/Bear spray/squealing like a pre-pubescent Chipmunk efforts have all failed and that a mauling is certain. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst in this case. Might seem like a silly idea but it seems like there have been a number of stories in the media these past couple of years, where a human has been able to fight off a Bear with a blade.
Anyhow I hope like hell that I never get the opportunity to use it.
What do you folks use for “fightin Bars”? Any good tales to tell? If so please share, nothing beats a good Bear story. -
WOW who ever built the knife did a beautiful job. I can’t imagine having to fight off old uris with a knife. I think that if I were in that situation and the bear ran through a cloud of pepper spray I would have to adopt the skunk defence.(I am gonna smell very bad by the time he starts chewing on me…)

I have to get me a quality bowie knife. I have one now, but its not quality steel, but its a heavy weight that will also limb branches if I need to.

Oh, come on! I think that gun control among law-abiding hunters has prevented countless gang related shootings in downtown Toronto:?.
But to answer your question, I don’t carry anything specific to animal self defence. If I found myself in the nightmare scenario you suggest, I would reach for a hatchet, machete, knife, pointed stick, banana (Monty Python reference) or anything else I could to fight. However, my few bear stories all end with them running away. -
Yah I wouldn’t want to bet on it either. The main inspiration for this build was the story of Chris McLellan who managed to kill a Grizzly sow that attacked him in August 2007 near Grande Prairie. He accidentlly got between her and the cubs. He stabbed the Bear three times and it died 30 meters from the attack site. Mr McLellan then walked 2km to his truck! One tough dude. After hearing this story a Bear blade didn’t sound like such a goofy idea. The best weapon no. Better than nothing, you bet.

That is a beautiful knife. How long is the blade and what’s the overall length? The sheath looks really sweet too. We’re fortunate to have the option to carry a pistol here in Montana, but if I had to, a knife like that would be a top choice. Very well crafted.

The overall length is 13 inches with a 8 inch blade. I would rather carry my Ruger 45 long colt, but one must follow the laws of the land. On the bright side it gave me a good enough excuse to convince my wife that I needed a “big” knife 😀

Unfortunately, there aren’t any bears where I do most of my hunting. However, the mountain lion population where I hunt in Texas and New Mexico has been increasing and lately I’ve started carrying a hefty knife and glancing over my shoulder more often!

I have very recently read Memoirs of a Hunter by Friedrich Remmler, can’t recommend it enough it’s is a window onto a bygone way of life and hunting.
The cover picture shows a hunter using a spear to deal with a bear, the detail is wonderful from the toggle on the spear to the fur on the underside of the skies, I’m hoping to get a print of this to go in the den.

If shotguns are allowed in your area, a good Remington 870 with an 20″ bbl & slugs would be a good Bear Deterant.

I have only had one instance where i was concerned when around bear. I got to close to a bear only to realize she had three cubs, speaking softly and slowly backing off worked but if i was desperate i think pepper spray or a good tomahawk (might) help
