Well , after a year on Ron’s list I finnally got my hands on my new Super Shrew bow . It’s 60″ 56# @29″ . Bamboo limb cores with Bubinga veneers . This is my first “long” bow . It’s loads of fun to shoot but I’m having some trouble being consistent . also getting some arm slap occasionally . have played with brace height and at 71/4 ” I think more likely the fault lys in my grip. Open to any suggestions .

Congrats on the new bow – pics please!

          What were you shooting before?

I’ll have to try and get some pics . Might need help from my tecno. savy son ! Lol. I was shooting two of mike beckwiths “Hawk” recurves . A 52# and a 55# . They shoot real sweet , but are a compleatly differnt feel from the light weight of the shrew . Was just looking at a couple of moebows videos . already picked out a few things (bow hand in particular)

The shrew is a “very light bow” { I have owned 4, 2 are favored hunting bows, another TD on order] with a small grip. I have found {for me personally}one needs to hold a “very strong bow arm” Ie, Lock it up ! and of course – “a Perfect Release” – A bow Quiver { more weight /stability} helps. Light bows are wonderfull to carry in the Mtns* – Tough to shoot –Practice!!. Be carefull, not to push your thumb too deep – because of the small grip- [easy to grip too much to the right -twist]-allows string to hit forearm—

              Scout

              * one of the reasons Mr P & I like em-

Ps – Yes it is a longbow — but a Hybrid — Why I like it!!– but not a classic Longbow –

I started my longbow shooting { 1972 } with John Schults long bows { great bows from a long long time ago & a galaxy far far away–haha ——IMHO the best Of the HH Bows——

Thanks . I think you hit it on the head . I think I’m allowing my hand to slide around to the thumb side , and possibly gripping too much . I’m going to experiment again shortly . ( one of the joys of living out of town ).

Mike– Welcome to the Shrew cult, uh, I mean club. 😀 I have owned three Classic Hunters, which are a smaller version of your Super Shrew, and one Lil Favorite recurv e. I love/d them all. I don’t know how much difference there is in the CH and SS, but if you’re still getting wrist slap you can try taking it on up to 7-3/8, which is where I keep the two I currently own. Also, those darn strings they use are among the stretching-est I’ve ever experienced–to the point I threw all mine away and replaced them with SBD–and it takes a LOT of arrows to stretch one out. So I recommend checking brace height every time you go out to shoot. I second Scout on the solid bow arm. I use a very light grip on these little bows and find that the thumb notch makes it easy to attain the same grip every time. I still enjoy shooting other bows (I also own a Bear K-Mag, though it’s for sale) and am happily aware that there are a great many great trad bows out there today. But for me, the Shrew has been my go-to hunting bow since the first time I shot my first one, several years ago now. I predict you’ll come to love it. 😉 PS: Enlarge the picture on the left and note the bow lying across the bull. Little bows, big punch.

                    Mike –

To Echo David – my 2 fave shrews currently are 54″ 56-+lbs at 27″ Brace Height 7 3/8, I check brace height every time I string up and adjust if Nec—–I really like the grip and find it an easy Index for deflection–great bows, fun to shoot!

Thanks Dave. I was thinking getting a Classic hunter ,but after consulting with Greg ,decided to go with the SS . Yes I have been checking the brace height every time and did have a lot of stretch at first . The bow arrived only 3 days before a shoot and common sense would have dictated that I shoot my regular bow . But I was having too much fun with the shrew ! My scores were lower but I didn’t care . My normal shooting partner makes his own bows and somtimes shoots 3 different selfbows in one weekend . He doesn’t give a Rat about scores! So I guess it kind of rubbed off on me , Lol!Thanks for the advice .Mike

Hey All, I am jumping into this thread as I too am in receipts of a 54″ Classic Hunter. I just built a couple of dozen arrows so I can get out shooting. I’d like to carry it with me this season, and want to know what any of you are using for a quiver. I’ve read that the Kanati Slim Jim and the Eagle’s Flight are two options. Any others with good results?

I like to carry a minimum of three two-blade arrows and its always nice to have a couple of judo’s on-hand as well for Grouse…

                        Any help is appreciated.

I own only one bow quiver, which I switch among all my bows as needed. It’s a little Kanati 4-arrow model that I got back when Shrew was selling them in their on-line catalog. Best bow quiver I’ve ever owned with two exceptions: the foam insert seems inferior and wears out really quickly (I solved that problem by getting a replacement foam from Thunderhorn, whose small quivers are the same size as the Kanati (and Thunderhorn also makes excellent bow quivers) … and one of the rubber straps broke the first season of use and when I contacted Kanati about a replacement I didn’t feel they were very sympathetic (should have provided a free replacement but I had to pay). But what keeps me using it is the small size, good looks, and mostly the very efficient strap-on system that beats any others I’ve tried for ease of use, rock-solid mounting, and silence in action.

                            GM –

I have the Eagles Flight quiver on my Shrews [ both 54″ ]and I use the Larger cap [ Jumbo i think ] as I am currently using tuffheads – a long BH. I am very satisfied with this model for my needs–

                            Scout

PS If you decide to go this route—get the model without the brace { totem}, or request the brace made to the short distance of the shrew riser which eagle will do. I have one of each – both work fine – had them [use em hunting /shoot daily]2yrs now -no breakage /repair

I have a great nothern quiver with rubber straps that fits all my recurves . Havent tried it on the Shrew yet ,but can’t see why it wouldn’t work . Had it for 3or 4 years now with no problems . I sort of like shooting the Shrew without a quiver , not sure what I’ll go with come hunting season.

Eagles Flight has a new quiver that is designed for 2 blade heads. It holds 4 arrows and lays flat against the bow. I tried the kinati 2 blade quiver that holds 3 arrows also.

Both quivers are good. But I think I prefer the Eagles Flight one more. It has a lot less metal on it, and it is a bit lighter.

I had all but given up on a bow quiver that wouldn’t mess with my shooting. But I found that both of these quivers will enhance the balance of the bow as compared to wider quivers designed for 3 and 4 blade heads. Reason being – it sits so close to the bow, and is set behind the riser.

You can hold be bow by the string (as to carry through the field) and it won’t bang into your leg. It hangs almost strait down.

If you call Don to talk about his EF quiver, tell him you want the flat arrow gripper, not the round one. If he acts surprised and asks you where you heard about it, don’t use my name 😯

                                    Steve –

Sounds like my Favorite Bow Quiver just got better [own 3]

My only quibble* with the older style, was the need for a leaner/longer Hood to accomadate BHs like the Tuffhead. Sounds like that is solved. Looks like I will be ordering another Eagles Flight —

Thanks Steve for the “heads up”

                                    Scout

                                    * every thing else about this quiver is topnotch and works great for me – and truthfully the old model worked fine.

Here’s the link for Eagle’s Flight but I don’t see the new quiver that Steve mentions on there yet:

                                      http://www.eaglesflightarchery.com/efa/index.html

But I would also throw in another vote for the EFA. I have two of them, and couldn’t be more pleased. They are very simple and light and stay put when strapped on.

I got out today and shot my Shrew Classic Hunter in Golden Gate Park and am very pleased. I’ve got the brace set at 7 1/8″ and was sending cedar shafts spined at 75-80 with 160gr field points attached. They weighed in at 590+gr. each.

The bow is very smooth. I have no string dampeners on it yet, and intend to use some cat whiskers. But the bow shoots quiet as is.

Thanks for all of the quiver info. I like a quiver on the bow and will try one of the ones listed above.

Ahh, such an evil-looking little beauty! I’ll bet “Brave” would give several inches of flaming red hair for one of those. 😀

I don’t recall your draw weight, but I have the identical bow at #53@28″ and it shoots well with 80-85 spine woodies (cut to 29.5″) with the Tuffhead 300 … should be easy for you to “move up” if you choose to someday. Also, FYI, with CE250 it handles almost any weight head plus heavy inserts.

Bruce –thanks for the link. I had already looked it up myself and had the same results as you. I really don’t care for the rounded arrow clips they show for their other quivers, but have no practical justification for that preference. I’d love to see a photo of the new flat 4-arrow model, and a review. Odd pricing if I’m reading the catalog right, with snakeskin quiver hoods cheaper than plain leather. On some models the stitching of the hood and the shapre are identical to the Kanati.

It’s a new model for the year and isn’t in stores yet. But he has them to sell.

If you are interested, I’m sure he would send you a picture. I’ll try to take some pictures of mine and post them here.

They can take the tuffheads I expect. It’s nice because there is no foam insert to fool with. Just leather on leather baby.

About arrows. I like the CE250’s for hunting, but wanted to get some 2317 camohunters for plinking. You mentioned inserts to add weight, which I have never used. Is this to get over that 650 gr. hump?

Mac, yes, and more. A CE250 weighs about 350 if I recall. My hunting arrows range between 700-800 total and ALL that weight except the shaft is up front. So it’s to increase overall weight as well as FOC. I use 100-grain brass inserts and 75-125 steel screw-in adapters with 225-grain heads for my carbon set-ups. For wood I use a 300-grain glue-on. Fast as all my low-50s Shrew have been, I’m thinking your big boy must be a blazer.
