I’m shooting a 55# montana longbow. the other day I was shooting, I was at full draw the shoot felt good I released Whap! the next thing I know my bows on the ground with my arrow close by and my bow arm hurts. I had no idea what happened. After inspection i found the arrow nock had completly shatterd off the arrow.
Then I thought crap I just dry fierd my bow! so I took a look at, checking for cracks and stuff and it was totally fine other than scraches from being on the ground and a missing medalian.
The bow still shoots fine i’m just wondering if I should have anymore concerns about the bow or is this just common amoung modern laminated bows? -
Sounds like your bow is ok. Dry fires can ruin a bow but it is common for modern laminated bows to survive a dry fire. One winter I was shooting one of my Robertson longbows and had two dry fires in the span of a few shots. It was below 0 and the nocks broke, but the bow is fine.
Last summer at the NALS I loaned a Northwind longbow to a recurve shooting friend for the shoot and he had a dry fire because of a broken nock, the bow is fine.
Often if delamination is occuring the sound or pitch of the bow when shot will change. If you hear a change in pitch or a vibration check it carefully.

What Chad says. The man absolutely knows his stuff … except that you should never let anyone else shoot any bow you intend to keep and use! I equate it to “loaning out your wife” but perhaps that’s too extreme. 😉
