New to here so please excuse the new guy question.

I have a Northern Mist recurve that is 58 lbs at 28 inches.  I have a draw length of 31 3/4 inches and at that length I’m just a smidge over 68 lbs draw weight.  I would like to shoot a single bevel broad head around 175 grains or better.  I want a weight forward arrow that is fairly heavy in total weight.  I would love to shoot a wood arrow but I’m not sure I can get one for the spine or weight I want. Not opposed to shooting a carbon or aluminum arrow. I’m currently shooting Carbon Express Heritage 150’s with Magnus Stinger 150 grains.  I wanted to stick with wood when I went from a 125 to 150 grain but there wasn’t anything heavy enough in wood at the shop when I bought them and I got the impression nothing heavy enough in wood existed. My hunting is for Whitetail and Black Bear with a chance of Elk. Probably don’t “need” all that much arrow but would like to have it just the same. Thanks in advance.

          Howdy Ed

          Welcome to tradbow.

I currently only shoot wood arrows with my mid 50-55 lb weight bows. I shoot single bevel Broadheads on wood shafts for those bows. I shoot carbon to get better foc in my  60lb bows, partially for the reasons you mentioned. I have not tried to set up any wood shafts in my 60 lb, which is still a far cry from your weight.  I have thought about building some wood arrows for my 2 heavier bows but havn’t got around to it yet, thus don’t have any current info. When I do I will  check out Forrester wood shafts as he carries heavier spined woods than most and used to post here on occasion. I think he probably could steer you in the right direction on what to get.

Maybe some other members have tried to set up wood arrows in the heavier bows and will pass on their experience by posting an answer. Please keep us informed on your progress as I am interested in doing it myself.

Thanks for the tip.  I will try to dig up Forrester arrows and see if I can contact them.

              You bet

Forrester has a web site. Easy to find. Let us know how it goes and what arrows you finally make up to shoot in your 68lb.

Back about a 100 years ago (it seems like) I was shooting Bill Sweetland’s Forgewood shafts out of a Jennings four wheeler. Very happy with them. Turns out that Alaska Frontier Archery is now making Forgewood again. I’ve had no dealings with that outfit but from their website they look to be pretty squared away. Their weight forward shafts might be worth a looky-see.

I think Alaska Frontier Archery is Jack Harrison’s old company that tried to get the forgewood shafts going again.  Jack has since retired and that website is being used to clear old inventory.  I don’t think anyone is making the shafts anymore.
