        I’m no stranger to traditional equipment but have never seen this before. About 6 weeks ago I was shooting my longbow. When I was done, I hung it up strung in my garage. My garage does not become “an oven” but it can get hot however the doors are frequently opened and close throughout the day and the windowLongbow is always open.

        I went to shoot it last weekend and found the string still knocked at both ends but the string was almost flat against the the bow. In other words it went from a 7″ brace height to about a 2″ brace height. I am afraid to pull it back thinking it may break or likewise un-string it. Other than this the bow appears normal. No obvious evidence of delamination or separation in the fiberglass. I have since brought it into my basement where there is more humidity.

        Anyone have an idea as to what happened and what I should do? Its an old 21st Century and I hate to give up on it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

          My immediate thought is either the bow got shorter or the string got longer. Maybe it’s the string and not the bow. What kind of string do you have on it?

            You’d think the string slowly unwound. Maybe try measuring it to see how it compares.  Interesting. I wonder if the string was too short and didn’t have many twists in it to keep it together. Dwc

              you did not say if it is a all wood or a laminate longbow, or flemish twist or endless loop string.

              generally, laminate bows will delaminate with obvious, dramatic results.

              i would suspect your sting as the culprit. get a proper length string and try again. older B-50 string sometimes will stretch/break . the older B-50 was notorious for stretch.
