I have a nice traditional bow and arrow rack in my office for off-season display. However, when the whitetail deer bowhunting season approaches, I want to have my hunting equipment out of harm’s way, but handy in the garage so I can easily step out the door and practice in my backyard archery range. I have made a traditional bow rack for my garage that is very inexpensive, easy to install and adjustable for any traditional bow (longbow or recurve).

You will need:

  • Two 3 ½ inch x #9 exterior wood screws
  • 3 ½ inch long piece of 2”x 4” wood.
  • A saw
  • A drill, with a drill bit slightly smaller than the wood screws
  • A countersink bit (not necessary, but makes for a neater job)
  • A stud finder if your garage has finished walls
  • A screwdriver.

Cut the 2×4 lengthwise in half, making two 2” x 2” x 3 ½” blocks. Mark a center hole on one long side of each block, countersink the marks with the countersink bit, and drill a hole through each block of wood to accommodate the screws. (Pre-drilling prevents the screw from cracking or splitting the wood.)

Locate the studs in your wall and mark the location where each block will be attached. Most house walls have studs located 16” on center. You might need a level to mount the wood blocks evenly, or you can eyeball it. Start a screw into each block, and then mount the blocks of wood onto the wall.

When mounting the blocks onto the wall, secure the screws firmly but not overtight, as you will want to twist them by hand to accommodate the curvature of your bow limbs. This traditional bow rack will accommodate a recurve or longbow in the strung or unstrung position by simply twisting the blocks by hand to the contour of your bow limbs.
