For a nice read of a very thoughtful article, check out Clay’s blog on the Sounds of Nature and the Noise of Man on Twisted Stave. Well done, Clay! dwc

            Dave, thanks for posting.

I enjoyed the article, but for one thing…  The usual dig at the hook and bullet magazines.  While I am in full agreement with the conclusions about them made in the article and elsewhere, it gets tired.  It seems we just can’t seem to make our case these days without also taking a swipe at those who don’t share our views.  If I was a teacher, and I was gonna grade this essay, I’d have to deduct a few points on this matter for style.

If our case be strong enough, it should stand on its own merit.  The point is to inform rational thinkers and sway people of good faith to the truth and right action, is it not?

I also find it interesting that Clay gets all the thanks.  He deserves thanks for posting the article, but the author, Chuck Boggs, should get the credit for writing it.  All of the comments after the article thanked Clay.  Was this intentional?  Lack of observation by supposedly observant hunters? Or just bad manners?

I for one appreciate Clay posting the article and the appreciative comments on the blog seemed to say such also.

I saw no one thanking Clay for his writing it on the page I read.

Perhaps I read not far enough?

Or maybe I should read words into what is written like so much is done anymore.

Thanks to Clay for making me aware and thanks to Chuck for his enjoyable article…

Steve, good points and yes, I did miss the credit to the writer. Definite lack of observation on my part. I could try to excuse myself for the lack of sleep the past couple of nights, but that’s often the case when I’m heading into the woods. Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated. best, dwc

Good luck with those deer!  I’m heading down to the coast for a little duck hunting.  Nothing like hunting ducks in 65 deg weather.  Guess I’ll wear my swimming suit instead of my neoprene waders…

I was thinkin about quail hunting today but there’s a bad guy running around my hunting area shooting at sheriff deputies and people.I’ll wait til they catch him before I traipse up there.

I’m too old to play the Lone Ranger…

Notice how his string arm elbow is nicely in line with the arrow.  He has drawn the arrow to the head and settled into a sturdy anchor.  His stance is is closed yet relaxed…

As always, the dang duck is at least one step ahead of me 😜

It’s tough when a cartoon duck has better form than I do…

Steve, you have a good duck recipe?  Some years ago I bought a new to me, used, shotgun so I could shoot steel shot and hunt ducks. Then I never went. Sounds like fun though. dwc

                                David,

No good recipe’s yet.  Every year I cook them up a different way hoping for better results.  So far, the worst part of duck hunting is eating the duck (insert woozy feeling emoji here).

This current batch are getting brined and will get deep fried.  We’ll see how that goes…

To me, all ducks taste like liver.  I like a little liver, but a whole duck’s worth is a bit much.  Makes me wonder why there was such a strong market for the market hunters back in the day.

                                  Steve, I agree.

My mother insisted on having ducks along with every other critter we had. There ain’t anything that’ll mess up the barnyard worse than ducks except for geese.  They make it so bad that ‘watching your step’ don’t help one bit. Just wade in and DON’T FORGET TO TAKE THOSE SHOES OFF BEFORE YOU GO INTO THE HOUSE.

I don’t know if wild duck is any better than tame duck. It’d have to be a bunch for me to decide to shoot one and eat it.

The best we ever came up with was to fillet the breasts out and chicken fry them.

                                  The gravy was good..

I’ve had Peking Duck and it was very good. Should be as they price it pretty special. I’ve also heard that doing a duck on the rotisserie on the grill is good. The fat drips down and makes good smoke. Maybe if you hunt them with your bow you won’t have to worry as much about eating them! (snickering emoji….) dwc

                                        David,

Tried to use the “reply to” button, but it doesn’t seem to work.  I was going to reply to your rotisserie suggestion:

I skin the ducks ’cause the fat is supposed to give the meat a bad taste (like that’s possible).  Once the skin is removed, there is no fat on a wild duck.

If I cook it this way,  I fear I will end up with a  petrified duck (insert crazy eye emoji here), still that might be an improvement (insert smily face emoji here)

                                        I love these new emoji’s.

Speak’en of cocky, I learned something interesting from an old book the other day…

The cock feather on an arrow is not named so for a bird, and thus the accompanying feathers are not named hen feathers.

The cock feather is so named in the same sense that a gun is cocked.  It is to make the arrow ready for shooting.  The mis-named hen feathers are properly called shaft feathers.

So put that in your duck soup and eat it (insert snotty-a$$ emoji here).
