The author is a wildlife biologist. He has spent the past 40 years working and hunting in bear-rich parts of North America, the past 18 in Alaska. In addition to hunting and fishing in Alaska each year, he has worked in the guiding industry and taught bear safety classes in interior Alaska. He has also been threatened by both brown and black bears.
